Singing Teacher Courses

The Australian College of Vocal Arts (ACVA) offers four professional Diploma courses that are designed to train, examine and accredit specialist studio singing teachers. These taught courses are for new and developing singing teachers, as well as those who are currently working as teachers and who are looking to up-skill. Graduates of the Licentiate Diploma may choose to proceed onto further studies in any of our advanced Fellowship Diploma courses.

Certificate (Singing Teacher)

Specialisation areas: Musical Theatre, Contemporary, Crossover or Classical Singing Teaching

This pre-professional level certification is perfect for those just starting out in singing teaching.

  • 3 Months – this includes 4 weeks teaching time, 3 weeks self-directed learning time using a structured plan, 4 weeks supervised teaching practice and an additional week for assessment preparation and finalisation time.

  • 4 comprehensive content modules and pre-recorded lectures delivered intensively in the first month of learning

    2 introductory level music theory seminars (pre-recorded)

    Supervised teaching practice

    Development of a set of lessons plans and teaching portfolio resources

    Guided instruction to support you through all assessment items

  • Min 15 years of age (under 18 years require additional parent/guardian permission prior to enrolment)

    No prior qualifications required.

    You must be able to sing already, prior to entry. As a test of your executive singing abilities, you will be required to submit an audition self-tape of no less than 2 full contrasting songs, in a genre of your choice. Here, your abilities will be evaluated in terms of: vocal tone, placement, pitch, timbre, expression, control, breathing and musical interpretation.

    You will also be required to undertake a 10 minute pre-entrance interview with an ACVA academic leader.

    You must also have English reading, writing and comprehension skills equivalent to at least Year 10 High School level.

  • This course is fully inclusive. The total cost is $900 (GST exclusive). Fees are to be paid prior to commencing.

Associate Diploma (Singing Teacher)

Specialisation areas: Musical Theatre, Contemporary, Crossover or Classical Singing Teaching

This entry level certification is perfect for new and aspiring singing teachers.

  • 4 Months (6 weeks taught, 5 weeks interim supervised teaching practice, 5 weeks assessment preparation). Course can be completed earlier than this timeframe (dependant on supervised teaching time & assessment preparation time).

  • 6 comprehensive content modules delivered intensively in the first 2 months, including 6 exciting seminar topics and 6 lectures (pre-recorded)

    2 music theory seminars (pre-recorded)

    Supervised teaching practice

    Development of a teaching portfolio and teaching materials

    Guided instruction to support you through all assessment items

  • Delivered 100% online.

    Language: English.

 Licentiate Diploma (Singing Teacher)

Specialisation areas: Musical Theatre, Contemporary, Crossover or Classical Singing Teaching

This advanced courses is best suited to established singing teachers or those who have a previous singing performance or teaching qualification (not a pre-requisite).

  • 6 Months (8 weeks taught, 12 weeks supervised teaching practice, 4 weeks assessment preparation). Course can be completed earlier than this timeframe (dependant on supervised teaching time & assessment preparation time).

  • 8 comprehensive content modules delivered intensively in the first 2 months, including 8 exciting seminar topics and lectures with industry experts (pre-recorded)

    3 advanced music theory seminars (pre-recorded)

    Supervised teaching practice

    Development of an advanced teaching portfolio and teaching materials (to diploma levels)

    Guided instruction to support you through all assessment items

  • Online / Virtual (with live instructors).

Fellowship Diploma (Singing Teacher)

Specialisation areas: Musical Theatre, Contemporary, Crossover or Classical Singing Teaching

This specialist course is designed for experienced, established singing teachers with previous advanced qualifications in performance or singing/music teaching. Its intensive assessment is geared to test both your executive teaching and performance capabilities, and your ability to research and construct compelling curricula and lesson plans for complex vocal learning situations in the context of studio-based singing voice teaching. The Fellowship Diploma is the highest award offered by ACVA and is available in multiple streams.

  • 8-12 months, wholly dependent on your self-paced progress

  • 4x 2-hour specialist coaching sessions with an experienced, post-graduate qualified vocal pedagogue, focusing on your individual capability development as an advanced, specialist singing teacher

    2x live specialist evidenced-based lectures focused on vocology / voice science

    2x live specialist seminars focused on vocal remediation strategies for young singers

    8x weeks of structured 1:1 mentorship during your supervised teaching practice

    Access to a series of hand-selected, vetted research paper and book-based readings to support assessment completion

    Blended assessment to accredit you as a specialist singing teacher

    Guidance and academic support throughout assessment drafting and submission.

  • Aged 24 years or over.

    Must hold a Licentiate Diploma from ACVA (in any stream) or an equivalent or higher qualification from any other recognised body (see below for notes).

What You’ll Study

The ACVA Singing Teacher Certificates and Diplomas are delivered intensively through a series of online live lectures, seminars, workshops, and 1:1 sessions. Depending on your chosen course, you can expect to study some of the following:

As a successful graduate, you will have honed your skills in singing voice education, and will have obtained an industry-based professional certification that represents and reflects the high professional standards you strive for in your teaching practice. You will be qualified as a specialist to teach private singing lessons to individuals and small groups, within a variety of settings.
